English to Croatian translation needs to be done by professionals

Why does English to Croatian translation need to be done by professionals?

Why English to Croatian translation can’t be done by ordinary translators?

Croatia is a nation that has been bombarded with allies and attacks from foreign nations since the beginning of history. From the Greeks to the invading Romans. To the Austrians, Hungarians, Italians and Turks. They have managed to protect their nationality and their soil. The Croats are also careful to protect their language from foreign invasions.  No language today is pure, and only made up of their own nation’s words. There’s bound to be loan words from another language that have become part of one language out of necessity. As they have defended their land, Croat s would not simply let foreign words penetrate their language, foreign words had to be first converted to a Croatian-sounding equivalent. That is one reason why English to Croatian translation is to be done by a professional translation company.

In the same manner, even though they themselves had allied with the Serbs to form Yugoslavia, and since Serbia is a neighbor, there’s bound to be several similarities in the language, Croats can still distinguish certain words as purely Croatian and not part of the Serbo-Croatian new national amalgamated identity. They would even go as far as substituting a Serbo-Croatian word for a purely Croatian one if given the chance, even though the Serbo-Croatian word could be acceptable.

Therefore any English to Croatian translation must be done by professionals. A non-professional can easily make the mistake of using Serbo-croatian words and that can be offending to many Croatian eyes.

Professionals would know that in Serbian, Latin and Cyrillic letters are used, but only Latin letters are used in Croatian. In Serbian, Ekavian and Ijekavian dialects are allowed but in Croatian only the Ijekavian dialect is recognized. They must know that Serbian and Croatian are mainly different when it comes to the Future tense, even though they sound similar. There is no need to use the phonetic alphabet to spell foreign given names into Croatian, but it is necessary in Serbian. Professionals would also know that any online translation program isn’t going to help with the translation, as most of the country is too besieged with problems to upgrade their internet connectivity and help improve the database.

Only 50% of Croatians know English, so the general rule that natives can translate is only half true in this case. That’s why for the present moment English to Croatian translation needs to be done by professionals.
