Problems in using Program Translation
If you have ever thought about problems when you use a program translation such as Google translator or any other one and you think the computer can do the work without any problems, you will see that this is not true.
Here are some of the problems of using program translation.
We will point out some of the problems that the task of translation poses to the builder of a computer program system for translation – some of the reasons why program translation is so complex. These are:
• The problem of ambiguity
• Problems arising from structural and lexical differences between the languages and
• Moreword structures such as idioms and collocations
There are many languages that have more than one meaning for one word.
That is called ambiguity. When a phrase or a sentence can have more than one structure it is called structurally ambiguous. This is not only problematic because the alternatives are unintentional (for example, they represent a wrong interpretation) but because the ambiguity “doubles”. In the worst case a sentence that contains two words, and both are ambiguous, can have one of four meanings. Well, think twice (or four times!) before translation of your document.
When you hire a translation company, you won`t need to be worried about these problems.
Some of the problems arise because of lexical differences between languages – differences in how languages are classified throughout the world, and choosing which concepts can be expressed in one word. Other problems arise because different languages use different structures for the same purpose, and the same structure for different purposes. In both cases the result is that the translation process becomes complicated. Problems sometimes occur because of lexical holes.
These are cases where one language has a phrase used to express what another language expresses in only one word. Similar problems are created by idioms too. This is another case where sometimes the phrase is translated by only one word. Roughly speaking, idioms are expressions whose meanings cannot be fully grasped by the meaning of individual parts that constitute them. So, the computer translator has big problems with idioms too.
These are some of the problems which the program translation can’t handle, so if you are translating any document or project that is important, you will do best to hire a professional translation company.
